TAMIL NADU AIDS INITIATIVE -THE VOLUNTARY HEALTH SERVICES
Tamilnadu AIDS initiative (TAI) project of VHS is supported by Avahan – India AIDS Initiative of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The first phase of the project was from 2004 to 2009 which focused on scaling up of services among the sex workers in 13 districts in the western region of Tamilnadu. The project covered approximately 50,000 sex workers (Female Sex Workers/Transgender/Kothis). The design of the project was powered by the community’s ownership and implementation which shaped as community driven STD/HIV/AIDS prevention program. In the second phase the design of the project was to transition the interventions to natural owners.
OBJECTIVES OF TAI
Consolidate HIV/AIDs prevention impact among FSWs and MSWs.
Build the skills and capacities of the CBOs and the NGOs to sustain the quality of the program after transition.
Build strong collaboration with government and other stakeholders to ensure smooth transfer of the program.
Create a knowledge base for scaled HIV prevention, document and disseminate the lessons learnt.
