| Of Women & Children – Women’s Day – 2008 |
 |
Over 450 women and 50 children gathered at the halls of the Voluntary Health Services premises on 7th March, 2008 to commemorate International Women’s Day. Special focus was given for women and children during the program. The main events on the day included:
| |
honoring community members who had maximum referrals for Tuberculosis over the previous week
awarding the SHGs that had maximum sales in the Angel Brand Sanitary napkins
and the launch of a new concept called “Nam Kudumbam” where mothers formed networks to take care of each others’ children
Besides, there was also a drawing competition for children of community members on the themes “What my mother means to me” and “How I will take care of my mother”

The Nam Kudumbam concept is from the thought, ‘when we take care of other’s children, our children too get taken care of as well’. Mothers from each district came together to network, and to stand guarantee the children of their friends. After forming groups, they entered the names of their friends and the details of their children in a group card, besides the responsibilities they would take up for them. This was aimed at providing a sense of security for the women keeping in mind the risks of the sex trade. During the event on March 7th, 22 groups of Nam Kudumbam were formed.
Community members who had referred their peers for tuberculosis screening were awarded with Rathna of Madurai topping the list with 14 referrals in one week.
In the manufacture and sales of sanitary napkins, in the competition among CBOs, the Chennai CBO that had manufactured 320 pieces and sold 300 was declared the winner.
However, the most moving aspect of the program was the drawing competition for the children. Organized over two categories, the younger age group was asked to represent what their mother meant to them, while the older age group was asked to depict artistically how they would take care of their mother. The winner showed a mother and child with the caption that she would take care of her mother like her child, while in the other category, the child who represented her mother as the earth, sun and moon and everything that was the world to her won.
The interesting aspect of the event was the manner in which community members came on their own expense from different districts, while the CBO TAI Vizhudugal sponsored the refreshments besides also providing educational kits such as school bags for the children. With issues such as quality education of children, prevention of child abuse and trafficking of children into sex trade besides saving for the children’s future were discussed openly and in a very vibrant manner during the meeting. The meeting concluded with the prize distribution in the presence of Honorary Secretary, VHS, Dr N S Murali.
